Vinayaka Mission's Annapoorana College of Nursing - Salem

As an outcome of the missionary spirit, dedication and vision that “Service to humanity is service to God”, theThirumuruga Kirupananda Variyar Thavathiru Sundara Swamigal (TKVTSS) Medical Educational and Charitable Trust, Salem started Vinayaka Mission’s Annapoorana College of Nursing in the year 1991. The college which was the first of its kind in Salem started with an intake of 50 Basic B.Sc (N) students. It was then affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai and recognized by the Tamil Nadu Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council. With effect from 2001, it was included in the Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation, which is at present known as Vinayaka Missions University. The intake of B.Sc (N) students was increased from 50 to 100 during the academic year 2002-2003. M.Sc (N) was also started during the year 2002-2003, with an intake of 24 students per annum in 5 specialties (Community Health Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and OBG). In the academic year 2008-2009, the M.Sc (N) seats were increased from 24 to 35. Post Basic B.Sc (N) was started in the academic year 2009-2010 with an intake of 40 students . The M.Phil. and Ph.D programmes were started in the year 2004. All the programmes are duly recognized by the Tamil Nadu Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council.

The college is situated in rural Salem on the National Highway - 47, towards Erode. It is 12 kms from Salem railway station and bus stand and is connected to Salem airport which is 17 kms from the institution. The college is attached to the Vinayaka Mission‛s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College & Hospitals (VMKVMCH) which has 24 hours emergency services. The college has 24 hour conveyance facilities and has a bus stop enabling the students and staff to reach the college with considerable ease. A canteen and supermarket are available to provide basic amenities to the students and staff residing within the campus. Gym facilities are also available. The college has excellent infrastructure for indoor and outdoor games. It has an airconditioned auditorium with a 400 person seating capacity and also has access to the airconditioned auditorium of VMKVMCH which seats around 750 persons.

Onam, Pongal, New Year and Teachers Day are annual celebrations. The institution also celebrates the Annual Day every year, where the talents of the students are showcased through the Cultural Day events and magazine.

The college has well-established laboratories, library, hostel and transport facilities. The academic programmes are handled with excellence by dedicated and qualified faculty members. Co-curricular activities such as Journal Club Presentations, guest lectures, seminars, workshops, conferences and other CNE (Continuing Nursing Education) programmes and extra-curricular activities such as sports and cultural competitions are conducted periodically every year.

Students are sponsored todevelop their skills in various activities. They are enrolled in the Students Nurses Association, Students Body Association, Alumni Association, National Service Scheme and the Indian Red Cross Society. Staff development programmes are also carried out, to update the knowledge and skills of the staff in various areas related to nursing. There is good cooperation among the various members of the college which makes the institution strong and focussed to progress towards excellence.
